Start with one simple question
You walk into a café and see a long menu. It can feel confusing. Before you order, ask yourself this. Do you want your coffee strong, or do you want it soft and milky? This one question helps you choose faster.
If you want a very strong coffee, think about espresso. Espresso is a small, strong shot of coffee. Many café drinks start with espresso, so it is like the “base” of the drink.
Milk coffees that taste smooth
If you like a gentle taste, choose a latte. A latte is espresso with lots of steamed milk, which is hot milk with tiny bubbles. It tastes creamy and not too strong. If you want a little more coffee taste and more foam, try a cappuccino. A cappuccino has espresso, steamed milk, and more foam on top, so it feels lighter when you drink it.
If you love chocolate, a mocha can be a good choice. A mocha is coffee with chocolate, usually with milk too. It tastes sweet and can feel like a treat.
Some cafés also sell a flat white. It is similar to a latte, but it often tastes stronger because it usually has more espresso and less milk.
Black coffee and small strong drinks
If you want coffee without milk, an Americano is a common option. An Americano is espresso with hot water added. It tastes lighter than espresso, but still has a coffee flavour. If you want just a little milk with your espresso, order a macchiato. A macchiato is espresso with a small “spot” of milk foam on top.
When you want a quick boost, espresso or a macchiato can be enough. When you want a longer drink to sip, an Americano can feel easier.
Cold coffee and easy ordering tips
On a hot day, you might want cold brew. Cold brew is coffee made with cold water for many hours, so it tastes smooth and not very acidic, meaning it is not sharp or sour.
When you order, you can also keep it simple. You can say the drink name, the size, and one extra choice. For example, “A small latte, please.” If you want less sugar, you can ask for no syrup. If you are not sure, you can say, “What is your most popular drink?” Baristas answer this question all the time.
With a few basic drink names, ordering coffee becomes easy. After that, you can try new choices slowly, one cup at a time.
